ILLEGAL SCRAP METAL FUNDRAISERS

Limerick County Council would like toadvise the GAA that the collection of Waste including scrap metal, cars,Batteries, Waste Electrical Goods etc is illegal without the properauthorisations being in place. While LCC are now aware that some events haveoccurred, it is our duty to advise you that this illegal practice should be discontinued.

Limerick County Council recognises thegood work that the GAA carries out and would like to offer our assistance ifyou are planning any such events. We are obliged however, to equallyadvise you that Clubs engaging in future collections, without authorisation,will be subject to the appropriate penalties in law under the Waste ManagementAct 1996 as amended.

To assist you therefore in the planning offuture events please note that there are 2 private sites within the County whichcan be used for such collections.

It may be possible to agree with thesefacilites an arrangement suitable to your Club.

Similarly the Council has it`s own RecyclingCentre Collection Points in Kilmallock, Newcastle West and Mungret wherespecial arrangements can be discussed. Please find attached a leafletadvising items which can be recycled at these centres or consult http://www.limerickrecyclingcentres.ie. Please note thatshould your club wish to utilise these facilities, it will be necessary toadhere to the following ;

· The Club/organisation will need toadvise both Indaver and LimerickCounty Councilenvironment section in advance of arranging a recycling event. Thiscorrespondence must issue via the Club Secretary.

· The Club will need to makearrangements with an Authorised Waste Collector to put the appropriate wastemetal skips in place within the Recycling Centre.

· AllWaste Electric and Electronic Equipment (anything with aplug/battery) will need to be placed into the designated WEEE area inaccordance with the WEEE Directive.

o Due to Health and Safety concerns, Only Calor GasDrums are accepted and will need to be placed in the relevant designatedareas within the Recycling Centres

· Each club will be limited to a one day event.

· Allincoming items may be subject to checking by the Staff operating the RecyclingCentres and their decision is final.
